The BIOBASEDCERT Research Cluster organised two back-to back events on the 4th of December in Brussels. Over the last two years, the BIOBASEDCERT Research Cluster has developed a tool to assess the performance of these schemes against a range of criteria, from the way they are governed to the content of their standards and how they monitor their impact.

The morning session was a continuation of the roundtable for certification schemes, this time focusing on the exchange between policymakers and representatives of sustainability certification schemes in the EU Bioeconomy. The morning session offered the opportunity to representatives from relevant certification schemes and certification bodies, who are active in different sectors of the EU Bioeconomy and policymakers to discuss the role of certification in regulatory processes.

The afternoon session provided insights into the BMS to support the EU bioeconomy governance and included discussions on how the results should be communicated to users and how the tool can support policymakers to increase the uptake of sustainable bio-based products. Stakeholders also explored how to maximize the tool’s potential in supporting the implementation of the European sustainability regulatory framework.

We actively seek feedback from targeted stakeholders in dedicated workshops such as the EUBCE side event in June in Marseille and the above mentioned workshop. A follow-up workshop (fully online) will be organised in February-March 2025 to gather input on our BMS progress. Stay tuned!
