With 19 participants, the 4th Network of Interest meeting focusing on Sustainable Textiles which took place 11 December from 10-11 CET was a success!

This time we focused on sharing insights from our sister project, BIORADAR and providing a policy talk which focused on the recent EU developments in the textile industry.

Under the leadership of Next Technology Tecnotessile, the BIORADAR project aims to evaluate the environmental sustainability and circularity of textile products. Daniele Spinelli and Matteo Maccanti talked about their research work on assessing circular economy principles that focus on waste treatment and recyclability. Dr Daniele Spinelli provided an overview of bio-based polymers used in the textile industry and their technical applications. He also talked about natural fibres and how the theoretical approach Life Cycle Thinking, emphasises the assessment and minimisation of environmental impacts at all stages of a product’s life.

On the policy side, Luca Boniolo, Programme Manager for Sustainable Textiles at ECOS, explained the impact of EU legislation on bio-based textiles which is particularly noteworthy, as textile regulations are generally horizontal and not specific to individual materials.

Engaging questions were posed by the audience and the discussion concluded with remarks that highlight the impact of EU legislation in Sustainable Textiles. Both presentations are recorded and you can find them here.
